Michael A. Pearson Scholarship

Award Amount: $1500

Are you concerned about race relations?
Are you working for social justice?
Are you trying to create a more peaceful world?

Dr. Michael A. Pearson was a faculty member in Sociology for 25 years before his death in 2002.

In his honor, his family and friends have instituted an annual scholarship award for students in Sociology who share his interests and goals in improving race relations, expanding social justice, and establishing a more peaceful world.

Who is Eligible?

  • Rising juniors, seniors, and graduate students in Sociology, Anthropology, Gerontology, or University Honors at UNC Charlotte.
  • The award is given to an outstanding student who has a demonstrated interest in the areas of race relations, expanding social justice and/or establishing a more peaceful world.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of: 3.00–4.00 and be in good academic standing
  • Must have demonstrated academic achievement, as determined by the administering college, department, or office

The award of $1500 will be applied toward Fall tuition at UNC Charlotte.


Dr. Tom Forrest Study Abroad Scholarship

Award Amount: $500

Who is Eligible?

  • Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in Sociology
  • Must be in good academic standing and have a minimum GPA of: 3.00–4.00
  • All applicants must also successfully complete Study Abroad 101 prior to the application deadline to be eligible to apply

Dr. George S. Rent Sociology Fellowship

Award Amount: $1000

Who is Eligible?

  • Must be majoring in Sociology
  • Masters level students

Dr. Margaret A. Zahn Scholarship for Criminology and Sociology

Award Amount: $1000

This scholarship alternates between two departments. It is not offered by the Sociology Department every year.

Who is Eligible?

  • Must be a senior or masters student in Sociology
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Demonstrated academic achievement, as determined by the administering college, department, or office
