Program Requirements:

The Sociology major has a very flexible curriculum.  Ideally students will take SOCY 1101: Introductory Sociology before progressing to more advanced (2000/3000/4000 level) courses. However, the major is sufficiently flexible that in consultation with a Sociology Department advisor, students declaring as sophomores and juniors can usually complete the degree on schedule.

Sociology

32 hours

Required courses in the major will count towards university requirements for Social Science.

General Education*

31-34 hours

Hours do not include those requirements which are satisfied within the major. Sociology majors may use SOCY 1101 to satisfy Social Science requirement of General Education, may use a Sociology elective to fulfill the oral (O) requirement, and may use a second Sociology elective that is writing intensive to fulfill the second writing intensive (W) requirement.  See also Foreign Language. *Transfer students with an associate’s degree are exempt from most General Education, but must complete Writing Intensive requirement and the Foreign Language requirement (Currently the Foreign Language requirement is waived with an AA or AS or 3 or more years in high school).

Related Work

18 hours

May be satisfied by a second major, a minor, or a set of coordinated courses developed through consultation with an advisor.

Foreign Language

0-8 (minimum)

Must demonstrate competence at the 1202 level in a language; competence can be demonstrated by transfer courses, placement exam, 3 or more years of the same foreign language in high school, or courses at UNC Charlotte.

Electives

28-39

As needed to complete 120 hours total.

* The standard General Education requirements consist of 43 credit hours.  However, in all cases students take courses that are required for the major or related work in the major that also fulfill Gen Ed requirements.  This block therefore lists Gen Ed hours students will have to take in addition to the required courses in the major.
